1.49cc Fury and Super Fury

The Fury appeared in 1958 and marked a resurgence in engine design. Influenced by the design of the Racer, the Fury incorporated a twin ball race crankshaft and used rear reed valve induction, a new departure for ED. At a quick glance it would be forgiven to identify the new release as another Racer variant.

However the Fury design was short lived as within two years the Super Fury (Fury series 2) appeared re-establishing the rotary valve induction method of the original racer design. This variant did away with the opposing 180 degree exhaust ports of the racer design and returned to the 360 degree porting design. The "Super Fury" version was a redesign by Gordon Cornell, incorporating many of the design features that had been Gordon's trademark from his speed and aerobatic control line flying experience.

As testament to its success, this design lasted for a further ten years (1970) until the introduction of the series 3 Super Fury with its return to the appearance of the series 1 Fury but using rotary disk induction and the design changes incorporated in the series 2. The most obvious change was the presence of a moulded nylon backplate and carburetter assembly. Two carburetter designs were available, one incorporating the usual needle valve assembly and the other being a variable valve carburetter presumably to cater for the growing RC market. The diagram shows the later "Super Fury" fitted with the RC carburetter and the earlier design opposing exhaust ports.

It is assumed that the return to rectangular exhaust stubs on the later series "Super Fury" probably simplified the fitting of silencers.

Although introduced as a replacement for the previous Hornet the crankcase underwent a complete redesign. As a result and due to the enlargement of the crankcase to accommodate the ballraces, the Fury and its variants were not now a fit for fit replacement for the previous Hornet, and it did not come with an attached tank.
